I thought I would drop a comment on the death
of a Female Amateur Boxer in a Golden Gloves (GG) event on Sunday April 3rd,
2005, in Colorado.
In Colorado, Toughman is banned yet a death
occurred in a GG event. In Iowa, Toughman is not banned, yet a death
occurred in January 2005 in Ohio. You maybe asking, What is the difference
between the two? First and foremost GG last death was in 2001, and Toughman
was in January. GG/USA Boxing has some 26,000 rounds per year, and Toughman
has 3,000 at most. Yet Toughman has had 5 deaths in less than three years.
The difference is that Toughman is not Amateur
boxing. Toughman is not even in the same category as amateur boxing.
Toughman is nothing but a large advertised brawl with ticket sales.
In Toughman the rounds are all uncontrolled
head blows, minimal referring, minimal safety equipment, nonexistent
training, limited review of the participants and their health,
misdirection’s from the promoters as seen by Ohio’s state investigation with
professional boxers entering and gross mismatches. I could go on and on....
So why do I continue to ask for legislation
when GG has a death as well. GG is an organization where the fighters are
highly trained, supervised, and managed. They do not deceive boxing
commissions by passing off their own nonprofit status to gain a boxing
license as seen by Toughman in the death of Art Liggins in 2002. In GG all
fighters are trained and they have the honorable goal to learn and excel.
These people are training to become professional fighters not to give an
their drunken best buddy a show and to prove to them how tough they are. GG
fighters are in it for the sport, the conditioning, and the honor.
I do not want to diminish the tragedy on
Sunday but there are significant differences between the two deaths. You
should understand these differences. Be aware as Toughman is planning on
events in your state.
